How we deliver Positive Behaviour Support

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners work across a range of settings, so sessions take place in the environment most relevant to the participant. In Pacific Pines, that can mean support at home, at school or in the community, with telehealth available where it suits. Sessions can also take place in person at our Robina clinic. This flexibility helps create a comfortable, familiar setting, and lets us adapt each session to the participant’s needs

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding why behaviours of concern occur and reducing them while improving a person’s quality of life. Rather than simply reacting to behaviour, PBS looks at the environment, communication needs, and any unmet supports to create practical, lasting change.

Behaviours of concern are actions that may be challenging, disruptive, or harmful to the person or those around them. They often relate to unmet needs, communication difficulties, environmental stressors, or an underlying condition, and they can affect a participant’s safety, wellbeing, and daily life.

A Behaviour Support Practitioner works with the participant, their family, and their support network to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern. They develop a tailored Behaviour Support Plan, coach the people involved in delivering it, and document their work in line with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements.

Not always. While some plans include dedicated Behaviour Support funding, an initial assessment can often be completed using existing Capacity Building funding. If you’re not sure what your plan allows, our team can talk you through the options.

In many cases, yes. An initial assessment can often be completed using up to 10 hours of your available Capacity Building funding, billed at the standard NDIS rate, even without a dedicated Behaviour Support line item. The resulting report can then support plan reviews and funding conversations with your planner or LAC.

Restrictive practices are actions that limit a person’s rights or freedom of movement, used to protect them or others from harm. Under the NDIS, their use is tightly regulated. A core goal of Positive Behaviour Support is to reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate restrictive practices through proactive, skill-building strategies.

PBS can help children, adolescents, and adults across a wide range of needs, including developmental, behavioural, and emotional regulation challenges. It’s often useful for individuals with autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, or dual diagnosis, as well as their families and support teams.

An assessment involves observation, data collection, and conversations with the participant and the people who support them. The practitioner identifies the triggers, patterns, and purpose behind behaviours of concern, then uses those findings to build a practical, individualised Behaviour Support Plan.
