Positive Behaviour Support

Gold Coast & Brisbane

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding why certain behaviours occur and developing strategies to reduce behaviours of concern while improving quality of life

Rather than reacting to behaviours, PBS looks at the environment, communication needs, and unmet supports to find lasting, practical solutions

Effective behaviour management is essential for ensuring quality of life and social interactions, as well as achieving personal goals. Our team of experienced NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners work with participants across the Gold Coast and Brisbane to help individuals overcome challenges, build capacity, and lead more fulfilling lives

Signs Positive Behaviour Support May Help

Behaviours of concern often develop gradually, and it isn’t always obvious when to seek support. If you’re noticing any of the following in a participant, a Positive Behaviour Support assessment may be worth exploring:

Early support helps identify what’s driving these behaviours, whether that’s environmental factors, communication gaps, or unmet needs, before things escalate further

Our PBS Practitioners

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners are trained in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) alongside a range of other evidence-based therapy tools, using a person-centred approach based on individual needs and preferences. Working with children, adolescents and adults across the Gold Coast and Brisbane (including mobile and community-based sessions across Brisbane’s northern suburbs) we work to understand what’s driving challenging behaviours and develop strategies that create positive, lasting change. From developmental disorders to complex behaviour needs, we specialise in crafting clear, goal-driven behaviour support plans tailored to each individual

How Positive Behaviour Support Works

Positive Behaviour Support follows a clear, NDIS-aligned process. Here’s what to expect from referral through to plan review

1. Interim Behaviour Support Plan

If regulated restrictive practices are already in place, we put an interim plan in place quickly to keep the participant safe while the full assessment is underway. It sets out an early understanding of the behaviour, immediate strategies to reduce risk, and first steps toward building positive routines

Our practitioner works to understand the why behind the behaviour. Through observation, data collection, and conversations with the participant and the people who support them, we identify the triggers, patterns, and purpose behind behaviours of concern. These findings form the foundation of the support plan

Built from the assessment, the comprehensive plan is fully individualised. It includes proactive and reactive strategies, skill-building approaches, the supports needed across home, school, and community settings, and a clear plan for reducing any restrictive practices. Everyone in the support network knows their role

A plan only works when it’s used. We coach families, carers, educators, and support workers to put the strategies into practice with confidence, provide visual supports and routines where helpful, and stay involved with regular check-ins and monitoring

As the plan review approaches, we document progress against goals, the outcomes of the strategies used, and our recommendations for ongoing support. This gives planners and LACs the evidence they need to make funding decisions with confidence

Why Positive Behaviour Support?

What a Behaviour Support Plan Includes

Every Behaviour Support Plan is built around the individual participant. Here’s what a comprehensive plan typically covers

Functional Behaviour Assessment

A structured assessment to understand what's driving behaviours of concern, identify common triggers and understand behaviour patterns

Proactive Strategies

Practical steps aimed at preventing behaviours of concern before they occur, shaped around the participant's specific triggers, environment, and daily routines

Reactive Strategies

Clear, agreed steps for responding safely when behaviours do occur, so families, carers, and support workers all respond in a consistent, de-escalating way

Skill Development Goals

Targeted strategies to build communication, emotional regulation, and daily living skills - addressing the underlying needs that sit behind behaviours of concern

Reducing Restrictive Practices

Where restrictive practices are in use, the plan sets clear goals to safely reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate them in line with NDIS requirements

Monitoring and Review

Ongoing data collection and structured reviews to track progress, adjust strategies, and ensure the plan keeps pace with the participant's changing needs

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding why behaviours of concern occur and reducing them while improving a person’s quality of life. Rather than simply reacting to behaviour, PBS looks at the environment, communication needs, and any unmet supports to create practical, lasting change.

Behaviours of concern are actions that may be challenging, disruptive, or harmful to the person or those around them. They often relate to unmet needs, communication difficulties, environmental stressors, or an underlying condition, and they can affect a participant’s safety, wellbeing, and daily life.

A Behaviour Support Practitioner works with the participant, their family, and their support network to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern. They develop a tailored Behaviour Support Plan, coach the people involved in delivering it, and document their work in line with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements.

Not always. While some plans include dedicated Behaviour Support funding, an initial assessment can often be completed using existing Capacity Building funding. If you’re not sure what your plan allows, our team can talk you through the options.

In many cases, yes. An initial assessment can often be completed using up to 10 hours of your available Capacity Building funding, billed at the standard NDIS rate, even without a dedicated Behaviour Support line item. The resulting report can then support plan reviews and funding conversations with your planner or LAC.

Restrictive practices are actions that limit a person’s rights or freedom of movement, used to protect them or others from harm. Under the NDIS, their use is tightly regulated. A core goal of Positive Behaviour Support is to reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate restrictive practices through proactive, skill-building strategies.

PBS can help children, adolescents, and adults across a wide range of needs, including developmental, behavioural, and emotional regulation challenges. It’s often useful for individuals with autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, or dual diagnosis, as well as their families and support teams.

An assessment involves observation, data collection, and conversations with the participant and the people who support them. The practitioner identifies the triggers, patterns, and purpose behind behaviours of concern, then uses those findings to build a practical, individualised Behaviour Support Plan.
